Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) – Causes and Treatments

Most of us are aware that strain injuries can occur if you overexert yourself or engage in strenuous activities. But did you know that you can sustain repetitive strain injuries from doing things like typing at a keyboard a lot or sitting in an odd position for long periods of time? It may not be glamorous, but it’s true! Most Americans will experience some kind of repetitive strain injury in their lifetime. However, it thankfully isn’t usually too serious of a condition.

Where They Often Occur

Repetitive strain injuries typically affect more than one area in a person’s body, depending on the nature and cause of the injury. The locations most often affected include, but are not limited to:

the back

the shoulder

the arm

the wrist

the hand

the thumb

The Symptoms
One important thing to note is that repetitive strain injuries are usually diagnosed by the fact that the affected area is otherwise healthy, with the only cause for complaint being the following:

short, stabbing pains in the affected area

weakness of the affected area

pain is made worse with activity and use of the affected area

Who’s at risk?

Almost anyone who engages in repetitive activities for extended periods of time is at risk. However, there are a few groups of people who are more susceptible to repetitive strain injuries than others. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

desk workers

typists

industrial workers

gamers

Treatments

Repetitive strain injuries will often resolve themselves, if the affected area is used less often and given rest at the onset of the pain and weakness. It’s extremely rare for corrective surgery to be required. Other types of treatments include:

ergonomics (changing your posture)

purchasing new equipment (specially designed computer items like a mouse, tablet, or keyboard)

wearing an over-the-counter brace

taking a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) over-the-counter drug like aspirin or Ibuprofen

Final Notes
Prevention of repetitive strain injuries can be an easy process. Typically, all that is required is for you to take a small, 2-5 minute break every hour from your repetitive activity. This will allow the area most at risk to rest, thereby relieving any strain that you put on it throughout the day. Aside from that benefit, taking breaks from your repetitive task is a great idea for your psychological well-being, too.

Whatever your situation with repetitive strain injuries may be, please make sure to take care of yourself, both mentally and physically! Remember: you are the only you that you’ll ever have.

People develop aches and pains in their shoulders for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, they can be caused by something as simple as a pinched nerve.

What Did I Do?

Many of us get minor aches and pains from time to time, and in most cases they leave as quickly as they came, without us having to pay much attention to them. However, serious consideration should be given to relieving your pain if you find yourself asking, “What did I do?” or “Why did I do that?” This is especially true for pains in your shoulder, and seeking shoulder pain relief should become one of your top priorities.

Causes

How Did This Happen?

People developaches and pains in their shoulders for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, they can be caused by something as simple as a pinched nerve (in medical circles this is called “radiculopathy”), or you might have overexerted yourself recently with strenuous activity. Other times, pain in the shoulder can be a symptom of something more serious, like a tumor or degenerative disease.

Should I Panic?

Don’t panic! If the onset of your pain occurred while participating in an activity, it’s important that you stop lifting, pulling, stretching, etc. right away, and you should attempt to find some shoulder pain relief. However, if your pain has persisted for an extended period of time, and you can’t seem to remember how or when it started, you should probably visit a medical professional for advice on relieving the pain in your shoulder.

Treatment

How Do I Fix This?

Sometimes, shoulder pain relief is only a Tylenol (acetaminophen) and/or heating pad away. Other pain relievers like Ibuprofen and Aleve also work. Taking any ofthese over-the-counter pills for shoulder pain relief is a great strategy if you’re on the go, because they’re easy to carry with you and simple to take. If needed, at the end of your day apply moderate heat for shoulder pain relief. You can use a heating pad or a product like Icy Hot.

Then What?

If you continue to experience pain after taking these measures, then it’s definitely time to go and see your friendly, neighborhood medical professional to ask them about finding relief for the pain in your shoulder. They’ll be able to diagnose the cause of your pain and recommend the best shoulder pain relief treatments. Methods like physical therapy and/or a local corticosteroid injection may need to be administered at your medical professional’s clinic/office.

Final Note

Finding the appropriate shoulder pain relief is extremely important, and you shouldn’t be hesitant to ask a local doctor or chiropractor for advice on treatments. Also, aches and pains are fairly common, so please, don’t panic! With the right method, relief for your shoulder’s aches and pains can be a relatively easy and painless process. Just take it easy next time, okay?

While relatively new to the West, people have sought relief through acupuncture since ancient times

The thought of having needles stuck in your body can be understandably less than desirable – and even downright scary, due to the perceived pain you anticipate having to endure. However, this pain-relieving modality has been in practice for thousands of years with good to amazing results. In fact, for some, it’s the only medical treatment that’s effective in managing their pain.

There’s nothing to fear except fear itself!

Surprisingly, there’s very little, if any, pain during acupuncture treatments, and for some, it’s a very relaxing procedure. After needles are placed in specific areas of the body to treat particular medical issues, the patient is left to rest while the nerve channels are being stimulated. Lying quietly and breathing slowly can be a welcome respite from a hectic life, and in addition to feeling less pain, patients can also feel physically renewed afterwards.

So is acupuncture effective?

Clinical studies on the effectiveness of acupuncture are, for the most part, inconclusive and are continually taking place. However, a comprehensive, first-of-its-kind study undertaken by three well-regarded medical institutions (a major hospital in Massachusetts, a chiropractic college in Missouri, and a Korean university), found that following acupuncture treatments, patients had increased connections among the parts of their brain involved in the perception and memory of pain. While some medical professionals believe that pain relieved by acupuncture is simply a placebo effect, in this particular study, in which subjects were given both “sham” acupuncture and “true”
acupuncture, they reported stronger pain relief from the real thing. The outcome of the study determined that acupuncture alters the resting state activity of the brain, which is likely why people experience relief and/or other therapeutic improvements.

Don’t take our word for it! Ask your friends and family.

Despite medical studies that imply acupuncture is probably just a placebo effect and has little to offer in the way of long-term pain relief, there are many, many people who swear by it and have never found a better way to lessen or eliminate their discomfort. There may be certain medical issues that respond better to acupuncture than others, but if you talk to friends or family members who have undergone this type of treatment, you might be surprised by the number of success stories you’ll hear. If you have pain that you’ve attempted to relieve through many different types of treatment but to no avail, perhaps it’s time to try acupuncture!

We have all heard that eating the proper foods is important for our health and well being. Proper nutrition is important no matter if you’re young, middle aged or a senior. Eating properly can keep you healthy as well as give you the energy and nutrition to be at your peek performance.

Properly Absorb Nutrients

Another reason for consuming the proper foods is to maintain a healthy digestive track. Eating for digestive health will ensure that nutrients are absorbed properly, and waste products are eliminated from the body. Eating for digestive health should be a concern throughout a person’s life. Waste products within the body can cause problems such as stomach discomfort, cramping, diarrhea, constipation, and even severe illnesses.

There are several key factors when eating for digestive health:

Drink plenty of water – this will aid in flushing out the intestinal track.

Eat lots of fiber – a high fiber diet will keep the digestion track moving. Vegetables and fruits are great food choices, when eating for digestive health.

Avoid fatty foods – too much fat will slow down the digestive track, and will actually clog it up. Stay away from high fat content foods when eating for digestive health reasons. Meat is full of protein but can also cause digestive issues because of the fat content. Choose skinless chicken and pork when eating for digestive health.

Stay on schedule when eating for digestive health – try to eat at the same time everyday, even if you snack, you should snack at the same time.

These tips should help when eating for digestive health.

Acupuncture has been around for centuries, and has been used to cure many illnesses and injuries. Acupuncture is used for not only treating and illness, but also for people with chronic pain, such as tendonitis.

First, get the proper diagnosis.

Pain can be attributed to many problems including tendonitis. If you are diagnosed with tendonitis, acupuncture is one form of treatment to alleviate the pain, swelling and discomfort. It’s important for the acupuncturist to know exactly what, where and how the pain is affecting you. Letting your acupuncturist know what helps your pain is also important. Medications, heat or cold packs are some examples of what might assist you in relieving the discomfort. Information such as when you first discovered the pain or what causes the pain to worsen is vital information for the acupuncturist.

Finding the right acupuncturist is important.

You can use an online referral service to find the proper acupuncturist. Using your zip code can help you find the closest acupuncturist in your area. And of course, if you live near New Fairfield, Connecticut; Danbury, Connecticut or Brewster, New York, contact Physical Medicine of New York and Connecticut.

Make sure your Acupuncturist is Certified

More importantly finding a certified acupuncturist that specializes in treatment of tendonitis and uses deep needle therapy should be on the top of your priority list. Tendonitis is a chronic ailment and needs to be treated in a way that keeps the pain and swelling from returning. It’s important that your body is not strained and is well rested when seeking treatment using acupuncture. Your body will react better to treatment if it is not strained, and is well rested.

Modern medicine uses acupuncture is an ancient form of healing practice. It originated in China many centuries ago, and in recent times has been used as an alternative to modern western medicine practices. Many people not only believe in acupuncture’s healing method, but also are fascinated by its deep and long cultural history. Some people turn to acupuncture because of its rich history. Some choose it because of modern medicine techniques are not working for them. Others chose acupuncture because it is a safe, proven and cost effective method of healing almost any illness or chronic injury to the body.

Modern medicine depends on several tools and surgical instruments to heal the body. Acupuncture uses very few items.
The main tools of acupuncture are needles. These needles are inserted into the skin in specifically selected areas. There are generally four types of needles used in acupuncture. All of the needles are capable of transferring bacteria to the body. Therefore, alcohol is another tool needed to sterilize the area and the needles. The only other tools needed are gloves, and an insertion tube for the needles. (Sterilized) Needles should never meet the bare hands or for that matter, anything at all. The needles should be sterilized, and only have contact with the area being treated.

Some acupuncturists use items not specially associated with the needle therapy
Stainless steel balls, pressure studs, and magnets are sometimes used. These items should always be sterilized as well. Not many tools are needed in this practice but having sterile equipment is essential in any form of medicine.

Wrinkles are a normal part of the aging process in people. Many people, especially the rich and famous, choose to fight nature by getting cosmetic treatments… Botox and cosmetic surgery are two of the most common treatments to stop or to remove wrinkles from the neck and face. Another option is acupuncture therapy.

Removing wrinkles by acupuncture is not a new concept
The Chinese have been performing acupuncture to remove wrinkles for centuries. This form of acupuncture is known as Mei Zen, which means “beautiful person”. In recent times, Mei Zen has become more popular in the Western Civilization, as an alternative to Botox and plastic surgery.

Acupuncture proponents believe this form of treatment is the best
Acupuncture can stop or erase wrinkles, and get rid of deep lines in the face according to the acupuncturist. This treatment works by stimulating the persons own body chemistry. The needles cause the body to produce elastin and collagen, which are the key elements to smoothing out the skin. People will never have to worry about scars, or pain. Some people even claim their face feels better even though the point is not to remove pain

Another popular reason for this treatment is cost
The price of acupuncture is much less then both a series of Botox treatments or cosmetic surgery. Many advocates of this procedure believe it to be much safer as well. Some critics doubt the effectiveness of acupuncture claiming there is no scientific proof that it works. They wont argue that the procedure isn’t safe, (no reported adverse effects), but they doubt that the procedure does what it claims.
