Physiatry is a medical specialization that has been around since 1947. The focus of this discipline is not only to restore the functional ability but to optimize quality of life. This discipline uses a whole-person approach.

What does the Physiatrist do?
The physiatrist is the individual who establishes the plan of care, listens and helps the patient with decisions regarding their care. A physiatrist will always treat conservatively and use a non-surgical approach initially.

The plan of care may include therapeutic exercise implemented by a physical therapist, modalities, medication and holistic treatments, such as, acupuncture.

Physiatry uses a multidisciplinary approach
Physiatry is a discipline for managing disorders, involving an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, or a chiropractor to name a few. Some conditions that are treated include, low back pain, sports injuries, stroke, fibromyalgia, and arthritis.

Physiatrists are trained to perform needle electromyographies and nerve conduction studies to better diagnosis neuromuscular disorders.
