Bursitis

Bursitis Pain Treatment in CT & NY

Bursitis, also known as bursa inflammation, is the inflammation of fluid-filled pads that act as cushions at the joints. Bursitis typically occurs at the knees, shoulders, elbows and hips. However, a person may experience bursitis by the heel and the base of the big toe.

Symptoms of Bursitis

A person with bursitis may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Swelling around the joints
  • Tenderness around the joints
  • Loss of movement
  • Pain that increases with movement or pressure

Causes of Bursitis

Bursitis is often caused by repetitive movements or positions that put pressure on the bursae around a joint. Common activities that can lead to bursitis include:

  • Throwing or lifting something over the head repeatedly
  • Extensive kneeling for tasks
  • Leaning forward on the elbows for long periods of time

Treatment for Bursitis

In the early stages of bursitis, it is beneficial to use massage therapy to safely break down scar tissue. Once the bursitis is stabilized, physiotherapy and joint manipulation can then be very effective in loosening up the related soft tissue, restoring flexibility and alleviating pressure and friction of the affected bursa.
