Scoliosis

Scoliosis Treatment in CT & NY

Scoliosis is an abnormal, sideways curvature of the spine. The normal shape of a person’s spine has an “S”-like curve when looking at it from the side. Viewed from behind, the spine should appear as a straight line from the neck to the tailbone. The “S” curve allows for an even distribution of weight and helps a healthy spine withstand stress. However, when a person’s spine is shaped like an “S” or “C” from behind, they may have scoliosis.

Symptoms of Scoliosis

Symptoms will vary depending on the degree of scoliosis. Common symptoms associated with scoliosis often include:

  • A visible curve in the back
  • Shoulders, a waist or hips that look uneven
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Muscle spasms
  • Back stiffness
  • Fatigue due to muscle strain

Causes of Scoliosis

Scoliosis occurs in boys and more often girls from eight to eighteen years of age. It can be something a person is born with (congenital) or as a result of assuming a distorted head or hip position (habitual). Other causes include:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Birth defects
  • Spinal injuries or infections

Treatment for Scoliosis

Specific chiropractic adjustments can help correct the early stages of scoliosis. Implementing a program of chiropractic care, the carrying of book bags properly, and early detection will ensure correct posture, strong muscles, and improved function and structure of the spine.
